Oh, Nuvifone, how you disappoint us. Over here at IFA we just managed to get a Garmin rep to whip out his Nuvifone prototype for a quick look, but sadly, almost a year after the device was first announced, there really wasn't anything new to see. We still aren't allowed to take video of the interface, or really see much of the phone other than the home screen, and when the rep tried to show us how the Nuvifone kicks the iPhone's ass in navigation, the Nuvi promptly crashed -- so at least those two have that in common. Not that we should be surprised, Garmin mentioned last month that the phone had been delayed into 2009, but we're quickly running out of patience, as well as any scrap of remaining hope for this thing to actually matter when it does arrive. Peep the gallery for a little bit of iPhone 3G versus action.

Gallery: Garmin's Nuvifone teases its way through another trade show

Permalink | Email this | Comments

At least two people complained to the ASA that the ad was misleading because sites that use Flash and Java don't work on the iPhone, and the board agreed, saying that "We concluded that the ad gave a misleading impression of the internet capabilities of the iPhone" because "viewers were likely to expect to be able to see all the content on a web site normally accessible through a PC rather than just having the ability to reach the website." If we had to guess, we'd say this decision is more likely to prompt Apple to be more careful with its ads in the future rather than ever bring Flash or Java to the iPhone, but you know Adobe is feeling pretty smug right about now.
Aside from the N85, Nokia has also announced the N85 mobile phone featuring customizable design and a load of multimedia features. The N85 offers up a full range of multimedia features such as aGPS, built-in FM transmitter, high-speed 3.5G HDSPA connectivity, web browser, 10 pre-loaded N-Gage games and a whooping 5 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss Optics. The N79 also features Xpress-on covers to enable users to mix-and-match the mobile phone’s appearance with their clothing style. The mobile package comes with 5 Xpress-on cover colors - Light Sea Blue, Espresso Brown, Olive Green, White and Coral Red. In addition to these features, users can also log on to their online profiles including Friendster, Flickr and YouTube. They can also access Nokia services including the Nokia Music Store, N-Gage, Nokia Maps and Share on Ovi, which is a Nokia service which allows Nokia users to share personal pictures and videos from their Nokia phones. The Nokia N79 also brags of its Carl Zeiss Optics-powered camera with dual LED flash and video light capture feature. Images that users take using the N79’s camera phone can be geotagged easilty. The N79 also comes packed with a 4GB microSD memory card. For its navigation features, the N79 is equipped with a built-in A-GPS which provides turn-by-turn navigation for walking or driving. Nokia also promises to release a Friendster widget which will allow N79 users to browse their Friendster accounts and view their friends’ profiles, view and post shoutouts plus other Friendster functions. And what good is a Nokia phone if it doesn’t have a customization feature for adding ringtones and entertainment content, mobile gaming and dynamic applications for personalizing the mobile phone. Luckily, the N79 have all those features and even more. The Nokia N79 will be released in October 2008 with an SRP of around $514.

Customizing one’s wheels is accordingly a highly personal pursuit – some go for show, some go for go, and some go to extraordinary lengths to show how uncompromisingly “top shelf” they are.
August 27, 2008 The crime of manslaughter exists as a 'catch-all offence' to punish those who are blameworthy in causing the death of another but whose culpability falls short of that required for murder. Manslaughter is an extremely broad offence and it has a difficult task in ensuring that all those who warrant punishment for 'non-aggressive' deaths are convicted. Simultaneously, it should not be too broad in covering those who do not warrant punishment for such deaths. There is little consistency in whether a particular dangerous activity leads to liability for a specific offence or for the generic offence of manslaughter when death is caused. This new book, entitled “Criminal Liability for Non-Aggressive Death” examines the current law and includes a variety of perspectives on the subject with chapters on specific modes of killing as well as issues that permeate all areas. ..

Well, here's one we didn't see coming: it seems that AT&T has wised up to the fact that Americans like their Symbian (well, at least a few of 'em do, anyway) and wants to keep S60-equipped options on the table. Yes, granted, AT&T is a founding member of the Symbian Foundation, but the proof is in the pudding, and the last Nokia smartphone to land there was the N75 in May of last year -- an eternity by mobile standards. More recently, the N75 grew up, got sexy, picked up some brushed metal, and emerged in Europe as the 6550; now, it's surprisingly and unexpectedly been retooled as the 6650 for North American 3G spectrum. It's got a 2.2-inch QVGA primary display, 160 x 128 secondary, 2-megapixel cam, AT&T Navigator (which means GPS), push-to-talk support, and HSDPA 850 / 1900 to compliment quadband EDGE. We don't know exactly when it's coming, but for S60 fans who cringe at the thought of having to blow several hundred on an unlocked set every time they want some fresh hardware, this should be welcome news.

[Thanks, Al and Oscar M.]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
